Right-to-work checks in depth: UK statutory excuse and US Form I-9 reverification

For HR coordinators, recruiters and onboarding staff who carry out or audit right-to-work checks in the UK, the US, or both. Complete 'Right-to-work checks and new-hire records' first: it covers why checks exist, basic timing, fairness and retention. This course goes deeper: choosing the right UK check method (manual, Home Office online, digital verification service or Employer Checking Service), keeping records that preserve the statutory excuse, calculating follow-up and reverification dates, correcting Form I-9 mistakes, and keeping the process non-discriminatory. Reference checks are covered separately in 'Reference checks'. Jurisdictions: UK (Home Office employer's guide dated 1 October 2026) and US federal (USCIS I-9 Central). Rules change often; check the current official guidance and your organisation's procedure. This is not legal advice or immigration advice, and it does not qualify you as an immigration adviser; refer unusual cases to HR, legal or immigration advisers.
