Planning company training: needs, objectives, sign-offs and checking it worked

For anyone who builds training for their own team: work out what training people actually need by comparing the job with current skills, set priorities, write objectives that say what the person will do, under what conditions and to what standard, choose methods (including hands-on practice and observed sign-offs), and check afterwards that people are working as trained. Uses the HSE five-step approach and OSHA's guidance on objectives and evaluation as reference points; your organization's own procedures govern.

  • Prioritize training using risk, numbers affected, new starters, job changes and new equipment
  • Write measurable objectives that state the action, the conditions and the acceptable standard
  • Choose between a knowledge check and an observed practical sign-off for a given outcome
  • Plan how to check that training worked, including whether people actually work as trained
  • Decide when refresher or update training is needed after changes, evaluations or long gaps
