Troubleshooting access-controlled doors
A repeatable method for door faults: start from the event log, split the problem into the credential and decision path, the lock and power path and the door position path, test one thing at a time against a working door, fix safely without bypassing releases, and record the cause. Covers reader and format faults, sync and schedule problems, voltage drop, strike preload, maglock alignment, door position and closer faults.

Skills you'll practise
- Use the event log to decide whether a fault is in the reader path, the access decision or the lock side
- Diagnose common causes: unknown format, offline or unsynchronised controllers, schedules and holidays, OSDP addressing, lock voltage, strike preload, maglock alignment and door position faults
- Keep life-safety releases working during fault-finding and use the impairment procedure when a door must be left insecure
- Retest every affected function and record the cause, fix and result
- Recognize when to bring in a door hardware specialist, locksmith or fire alarm contractor
