Cisco Meraki MX troubleshooting: blocked traffic, Auto VPN, client VPN, port forwards and DHCP conflicts

Meraki's own troubleshooting guides turned into a working routine: gather the right facts, find which MX feature (Layer 3 or Layer 7 rule, content filtering, threat protection or a group policy) is blocking traffic and where each one logs; read the VPN status page to separate registry, NAT, route and subnet problems in Auto VPN; fix client VPN connections and resource access; and trace port forwarding and DHCP conflicts with simultaneous packet captures and the event log.

Skills you'll practise

  • Collect the device, network and resource facts Meraki recommends before troubleshooting blocked traffic
  • Identify which MX security feature is blocking traffic and where its evidence appears (event log, Security Center, firewall logging tool, packet capture)
  • Diagnose Auto VPN failures from the VPN status page: registry disconnected, unfriendly NAT, unadvertised or overlapping subnets
  • Resolve client VPN connection and resource-access problems such as a changed uplink IP, shared secret mismatch, subnet overlap, DNS and NetBIOS
  • Use simultaneous internet and LAN captures to find why a port forward doesn't work
  • Explain what an MX client IP conflict event means and track down its cause
