Wireless troubleshooting: channel overlap, roaming and signal quality
For network and MSP technicians who already know the Wi-Fi bands and how to read a laptop's Wi-Fi status, and now need to fix 'the Wi-Fi is bad' from the access point side. It builds on 'Wi-Fi fundamentals' and 'Wi-Fi troubleshooting from the laptop'. You'll scope a complaint before touching settings, find co-channel and adjacent-channel contention, calculate signal-to-noise ratio against data and voice targets, explain why a client roams late (roam triggers, 802.11k/v/r), and make one change at a time with before-and-after evidence. Examples use vendor documentation from Cisco Meraki, Apple and Microsoft; your own controller will name things differently, so follow its documentation for the exact screens. Ends with a supervisor-graded troubleshooting case.

Skills you'll practise
- Scope a Wi-Fi complaint by clients, device types, APs, SSIDs and time before changing settings
- Identify co-channel and adjacent-channel interference from a channel plan, neighbour list and channel utilization
- Calculate SNR from signal and noise readings and judge whether signal quality meets data or voice targets
- Explain why a client roams late or not at all, using roam triggers and 802.11k/v/r support
- Choose and verify one change at a time (channel, power, width, SSIDs, roaming features) with before-and-after evidence
