Fixing rack airflow and cable management in small server rooms and closets
For network and field technicians, MSP engineers and low-voltage installers who already know how to build a rack (see 'Building a network rack for an office') and the basics of front-to-back airflow (see 'Airflow and hot/cold aisles'), and now get called to an existing closet or small server room that runs hot. You'll identify recirculation and bypass paths, check each device's airflow direction against its fan and power-supply labels, choose fixes for open rack spaces, gaps and cable bundles, measure inlet temperatures and judge them against the ASHRAE recommended range quoted by the US Department of Energy, and write a before-and-after report. Grounded in ENERGY STAR's airflow and embedded data center guidance, the DOE FEMP Best Practices Guide (2024) and Juniper switch airflow documentation. Work on a live rack only with the site owner's agreement and within your company's change process. Ends with a supervisor-graded site assessment.

Skills you'll practise
- Identify recirculation and bypass paths in a small-room rack from a walk-round and inlet readings
- Check that each device's airflow direction matches the rack's cold and hot sides using fan and power-supply airflow labels
- Choose fixes for open rack spaces, gaps, openings and cable bundles that block intake or exhaust
- Measure inlet temperatures at the equipment and judge them against the ASHRAE recommended range
- Write a before-and-after airflow report with readings, photos and the changes made
