Labelling cables, ports and spaces: building and maintaining an identifier scheme

For cabling, network and field technicians who already terminate and label outlets and panel ports to a project scheme ('Terminating, labeling, testing and documenting copper links' and 'Labeling, documentation and customer handover') and now need to design a scheme for a whole site and keep it right. You'll choose the administration class and what the scheme must identify, from racks and backbone to fibre, bonding and outside plant; write identifiers that stay true as the site grows; choose label materials and placement; audit labels against records and the real connections; and update both through moves, adds, changes and rehoming. ANSI/TIA-606 is a licensed standard: this course describes it through public sources and doesn't reproduce it, so use the edition your contract names. Ends with a supervisor-graded audit of a real rack or room.

  • Write identifiers for spaces, racks, panels, ports, backbone and outside plant cables that follow one documented scheme
  • Choose label materials, printing and placement that stay legible for the life of the cabling
  • Identify mismatches between labels, records and what is actually connected
  • Update labels and records during moves, adds, changes and rehoming so they still agree
