Google Sheets: FILTER, QUERY, data validation and protected ranges

For office and operations staff who run shared trackers and reports in Google Sheets. Prerequisite: spreadsheet fundamentals (tables, simple formulas). You learn to build live views with FILTER, summaries with QUERY, dropdowns that stop bad entries, and protections that prevent accidental edits, along with what protection does not do. Based on Google Docs Editors Help and Google's Query Language reference.

  • Write QUERY statements that select, group, sort and label data in the required clause order, and identify why a QUERY returns wrong totals or no rows
  • Set up dropdown data validation that rejects or warns on invalid entries
  • Choose between a warning and restricted editing for a protected range, and explain why protection isn't a security control
