Protecting and sharing Excel workbooks safely
For office, finance, HR and operations staff who build workbooks other people fill in, use or receive: templates, trackers, budgets and reports. Prerequisite: 'Excel beginner: entering data, ranges, sorting and filtering'. You'll choose between sheet protection, workbook structure protection and file encryption; set up a sheet where people can edit only the input cells; explain what protection doesn't do and when a password isn't enough for sensitive data; inspect and clean a copy with Document Inspector before it leaves your team; and share for co-authoring with the right permissions, restoring an earlier version when something goes wrong. Grounded in Microsoft Support documentation for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2016 to 2024 and Excel for the web. For sharing-link types and audits in depth, see 'OneDrive and SharePoint sharing: link types, inheritance, external sharing and audits'. Your organisation's data classification and sharing rules come first. Ends with a supervisor-graded task.
