Budgeting: building and tracking a departmental budget

For team leads, department managers and budget holders who now have to build their own department's annual budget and track it through the year, working with a finance team. Complete 'Reading a budget vs actual report' first. You'll build lines from drivers with written assumptions, separate operating costs from capital purchases using your finance team's policy, phase the budget by month, calculate year-to-date variances and a full-year forecast, and tell the difference between having budget and having approval to spend. It uses HM Treasury's Managing Public Money (UK), the US GAO Green Book and IRS guidance on tangible property (US) as reference points, adapted for a company department. This course is not accounting or tax advice and doesn't qualify you to give it; your finance team decides accounting and tax treatment, and your company's policies take priority.
