Copper cable certification results: limits, margins, marginal passes and diagnostics
For cabling and network technicians who can terminate and wire-map a link and know the difference between a permanent link and a channel, and now have to set up certification correctly and explain the results. It builds on 'Cable testing' and 'Terminating, labeling, testing and documenting copper links'. You'll choose the limit and adapters a specification calls for (including modular plug terminated links), check a report's header, read worst-case margins and marginal (*) results, use the failing parameter, pairs and time-domain data to find the cause, and write a retest and acceptance note. Examples follow Fluke Networks' published guidance; other certifiers use similar terms, so check your tester's manual for exact screens. Ends with a supervisor-graded results review.

Skills you'll practise
- Choose the test limit, link model and adapters (permanent link, channel, MPTL) that match the job specification before testing
- Read a certification report's header: test limit, cable type, NVP, calibration date and software version
- Interpret worst-case margin and worst-case value for insertion loss, NEXT, PSNEXT, ACR-F and return loss, including marginal (*) results
- Identify the likely cause of a failure from the failing parameter, the pairs and frequency affected, and HDTDX/HDTDR location data
- Write a retest and acceptance note that lists failures, marginal passes, fixes and the evidence the customer receives
